It has no equal.
The weak can overcome the strong;
The supple can overcome the stiff.
Under heaven everyone knows this,
yet few put it into practice.
(Lau Tzu, Tao Teh Ching)
What is Tai Chi Chuan?
Tai Chi Chuan is a way of movement and meditation that originates from Chinese Martial Arts, Medicine and Philosophy. It is a powerful and practical way to harmonise and transform the health of the body and mind through the circulation and cultivation of “Chi” or “Life-force”. Through practicing Tai Chi you learn ways to improve self confidence, help relaxation, correct posture, aid concentration, and improve energy levels and fitness, all of which make it an excellent antidote to many of the stresses and strains of modern day living. In the Infiniteway School we train Yang and Nanpai styles and teach all 3 aspects; Healing, Martial arts, and Meditation for a complete understanding of Tai Chi Chuan.
Internal Martial Arts
Tai Chi Chuan is a very practical and efficient method of self defense. Through its practice one can learn how to neutralise and redirect an attack by using an opponents strength and aggression against them. To the outsider Tai Chi Chuan can simply look like a slow moving dance, but in reality each of the the postures has highly effective martial applications that cover many different angles of attack and defense. The detailed training of the postures helps one understand internal and external structure, improves postural alignment and develops Qi (Chi), which strengthens from the inside out, so keeping the body supple and healthy. The practise of the forms links the postures together and teaches one how to relax, focus intention and flow smoothly from one movement to the next. The play of sensing/pushing hands helps you learn how to stick, follow and interpret another persons movement and intent. All together this helps to build confidence, internal strength and awareness, along with a strong calm body and mind able to deal effectively with lifes ever changing situations.
Healing & Meditation
Good health and mental clarity are a natural effect of practicing Tai Chi correctly. The movements are performed by the whole body so stimulating the flow of blood and Chi through the internal organs, muscles and joints. The nervous system is calmed, and the mind falls into a naturally receptive and relaxed state where healing can take place. As one becomes aware of the flow of internal energy through the body, it becomes possible to clear the subtle blocks that bring disharmony to body and mind. The practice of Tai Chi is excellent way for healers to strengthen, cleanse and recharge before and after treatments.
Philosophy
Tai Chi follows the philosophy of Yin and Yang, a dynamic play of opposites that describes the functioning of the cosmos and all that is contained in it. Through dedicated practice, it is possible to gain to a deep understanding of the subtle interconnection between Earth, Human beings and the Cosmos. Through practice, insight and understanding one can realise the Tao of Tai Chi.
Further Study
Once Students have a good grounding in the hand forms and postures, there will be a chance to deepen the practice through the study of weapons, martial applications, spontaneous movement qigong and acupressure. This includes the location and manipulation of acupressure points for self-defense and healing, and Meridian massage for healing yourself and others. Weekend courses are also available to those who wish to study further.
